Smart, Strong, Amazing: The Carolina Rollergirls

All donations are tax-deductible

Formed in 2004, the Carolina Rollergirls were some of the first skaters to begin the women’s flat track roller derby revolution. CRG helped form the sport’s governing body, the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA). Now in its 9th season, the league continues to grow by training players in an effort to compete at the highest level in the sport.

The league operates as a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization and is run by the skaters, with the support of numerous dedicated volunteers. Every member of the league works tirelessly to build and support the sport of roller derby.

What It Takes

If you already know a rollergirl, you might not be surprised to find out that roller derby is an expensive sport. Skaters don’t get paid; in fact, we pay to play! Skates, safety equipment, monthly dues, uniforms, insurance; these are all costs that individual skaters commit to. The league as a whole needs to secure space to practice, book a venue for bouts, and help with travel expenses for the Division 2 All-Star team.

League members contribute to these costs through their monthly dues and by volunteering a minimum amount of time each month to support league operations. Skaters who take on a board position often spend as many hours a month as they would on a significant part-time job. By donating their time as members of the organization, skaters are able to raise money through ticket sales, sponsorships, and donations—like yours!—to keep the Carolina Rollergirls going strong.

Big Dreams

Roller derby is a growing sport! In order to meet the training needs of its many members, grow as a competitive league, and deliver high-level derby to our fans in the Triangle, CRG raised money for a sustainable solution: our own warehouse. Our dream was to secure a warehouse as a practice space, allowing the team to train even harder than we already do. The Carolina Rollergirls ‘Chop Shop’ is a dream come true! Now we’re able to hold more practices, train harder, and connect with area leagues such as the Collision Men’s Derby team.

Your donation would help us continue the support of our dream: being able to pay the costs of our own warehouse (The Carolina Rollergirls Chop Shop). The Chop Shop could see some fantastic workshops, events, and scrimmages from the help of your donation!

Skaters Give Back

The Carolina Rollergirls are certainly in it for the love of the game, but also spend a lot of time working on behalf of the community. Over the years, CRG has raised tens of thousands of dollars for other local nonprofits. We’ve partnered with the Special Olympics, Habitat for Humanity, InterAct, Girls Rock NC, and many, many other Triangle organizations over the years.

“Physically, CRG trained me to be in the best shape of my life. Emotionally, I matured and learned to stand up for myself, cooperate with a wide variety of women coming together for one purpose, and face challenges with bravery and fortitude. Mentally, I learned to think fast, comprehend rules and strategy, and make decisions quickly. Spiritually, CRG fulfills an internal drive to bond with others and be part of a family. I believe it will always be one of the best decisions of my life.”
