Meeting Moong Chi

So, your friendly neighborhood derby reporter recently caught up with Moong Chi for an interview. Before we get into the question and answer portion, let’s just go over one thing. It’s Moong Chi, the “Chi” rhymes with shy (which she surely is not)… So get it right or suffer the consequences.

HME: What brought you to the Carolina Rollergirls?
MC: I lived in Asheville when the revival began for roller derby and was part of the Blue Ridge Rollergirls from their beginning. When I moved back home (I am from Durham, NC) I transferred into my hometown team.

Moong's welcome back when returning to play the Blue Ridge Rollergirls in July

HME: How long have you been involved with the sport?
MC: I have been involved since July 2006

HME: What is your favorite aspect of playing roller derby?
MC: Being a part of a team and a family

HME: Who is the biggest supporter in your life of you playing this sport?
MC: Both of my moms have been the greatest support as far as being great moms and great fans. They helped me since the very beginning.

HME: If you could change one thing about how you have trained for roller derby, what would you change?
MC: I would have quit smoking sooner.

HME: What do you do to pay the bills and buy the wheels?
MC: I am a professional dog wrestler… I mean a veterinary assistant

HME: What is your educational background?
MC: I have a degree in animal care and facility management and a degree in Art with a focus in printmaking

HME: Do you watch other sports?
MC: I watch soccer, bull riding, car racing

HME: Is it more important to win or to give it your all and learn something?
MC: Winning happens when you give it your all and learn something

Are words really needed for this one?

HME: Tell us about your tattoos.
MC: Anything from Durham County, NC to a baby triceratops.

HME: What do you like to rock out to while skating at speed practice or cleaning the house?
MC: I rock out to myself! And sometimes Vampire Weekend, Portishead and Tegan and Sara more recently

HME: What are your favorite meals to cook at home?
MC: I love to make barbeque and cheddar tempeh sandwiches, and tofu stir-fry

HME: Have you had any major injuries because of roller derby?
MC: I have broken fingers, ribs, my collar bone and my wrist (plus lots of awesome rink rash)

Roller Derby!

HME: Do you have any pets?
MC: I have 3 dogs, a cat and 2 leopard geckos (right now)

HME: What is the scariest thing you have ever done?
MC: I may be crazy enough to not really have fear, but it was crazy watching a hawk come out of anesthesia and off of the surgical table trying to rip the Dr apart and then catching and getting it back under

Peace Out
