Some people just test well. They ace their SATs, they did their driver’s test like they were in The Italian Job, and they never had to study. Don’t you just hate them? A way more important challenge than the SATs or driver’s tests or personality tests is coming up this summer: The Carolina Rollergirls Tryouts!
To ease our prospective skaters’ test-taking anxieties, we’re having a Boot Camp. It’s like a big study group, but appreciably sweatier, and instead of your usual teaching assistants, you have experienced Carolina Rollergirls going over all the tryout skills with skaters.
When I talk to people who are interested in being skaters out in the big wide world, and suggest that they try out, they often say that they’re not sure if they have what it takes, if they’re in good enough shape. If you worry about that, then the Boot Camp is absolutely for you. Not only do we go over all of the skills- stops, turns, proper skating form, crossovers, backwards skating, propelling, and a bunch of things you may never have heard of- we go over strength training exercises that really help those muscles that you’ll use most in roller derby. If you think you’re out of shape and you’re right, you’ll learn how to get there for derby. If you think you ARE in shape, well… we’ll just have to see about that!
At the Boot Camp, you can get individual attention that’s really hard to find anyplace else, from people who know what they’re talking about. You’ll get to find out, see demonstrated, and try for yourself all the specific skills for Carolina Rollergirls tryouts.
If you want to attend, here’s what you need:
Ten bucks, even if you have a skate pass.
Photo ID proving that you are 18 or older.
Your own elbow pads, wrist guards, knee pads, and helmet. NO GEAR WILL BE LOANED OUT. You must have all gear to participate.
Rental skates are available.
You’ll be required to sign a waiver before you participate in the Boot Camp drills. We’ll be starting off skates, so please wear athletic shoes.
RSVP to JoinUs [at] carolinarollergirls [dot] com, and if you’re on Facebook, you can check out the event there as well.
The camp is at the Skate Ranch of Raleigh, 2901 Trawick Road.
We will begin promptly at 11:30, so please arrive a bit early to fill out the waiver. No late arrivals will be admitted.
April 3rd, 2011 is the big day! (It’s also National Chocolate Mousse Day, so after all your hard work, you can celebrate with a tasty treat!)
